Behind the Scenes: How Our Foster Closet Works

  • Foster Hope NY’s Foster Closet is completely donation-based, relying on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community groups to provide essential items for children in foster care. From clothing and toiletries to school supplies and comfort items, every donation helps ensure that children entering foster care have the resources they need to feel safe, supported, and cared for. With 100% of items donated, the Foster Closet is a true reflection of the community’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

  • There are several meaningful ways people can donate to our Foster Hope NY Foster Closet. Individuals can contribute by donating like new or new clothing, shoes, and accessories for children of all ages. In addition, we accept new toiletries, baby items, school supplies and comfort items to ensure they have everything they need. Monetary donations are also welcomed, which allow us to purchase specific items or cover operational costs. People can also host donation drives or partner with local businesses to collect much-needed items. Every contribution, big or small, makes a significant impact on the lives of children in foster care.

  • While we greatly appreciate all donations, there are a few items that we are unable to accept. We ask that people refrain from donating used toys, furniture, or items that are stained, torn, or otherwise damaged. Additionally, we cannot accept items that are expired or perishable, such as food or medicines, as well as items that may pose safety hazards. Please check that all clothing is clean and in good condition, and ensure that all donations are suitable for children in foster care. If you're unsure whether an item is appropriate, feel free to contact our foster closet director for guidance.
